Seems like an intense week for economic crises is brewing: Greek banks will be closed till July 6 and also China's stock market is tumbling, Japan down today as well. Who knows how much bad sovereign debt lies in random Japanese or Chinese banks? Credit default swaps or other derivatives? The Chinese "equities bubble" happens to really be cracking the same week as Greece's deal runs out and the biggest IMF payment default ever is about to hit the books.
The massive debt complex only escalated by the post 2007 bailout. It's like the financial equivalent of 'entangling alliances' in WWI. The global aggregate demand slowdown continues. Puerto Rico is also struggling with systemic debt. None of this stuff got solved, central bank intervention, bond purchases and printing only can paper over some holes in the situation. More so than usual, *brace yourselves*

Over at WTFRLY.com there is a big roundup article getting put together as we speak.

Most people have no idea that the National Security Agency gets involved in big events like national political conventions and the Olympics: National Special Security Events (NSSEs) with security led by the Secret Service, which is now a part of the Department of Homeland Security.
Many ideas taken for granted - including the separation of military and civilian life within the US - evaporate in NSSEs. Many, many federal agencies send little teams, including advanced military intelligence.
This is apparently the first time that it has been really noted the NSA's director in 2007 officially stated that NSSE's are strategic missions. This in turn means that the NSA must have had *some* role at the 2008 Republican National Convention in Minneapolis. (see our RNC documentary Terrorizing Dissent here & RNC08Report for docs) More background below the doc fulltext.
It's hard to overstate the nasty, elitist, disruptive effects of the Olympics. As a new resident of Boston, the unfortunate news that the 2024 Olympics now has this city in its crosshairs is disappointing & fear inducing. After all I ran into (at least) four FBI informants because of the 2008 RNC, gassed & shot at by the authorities.
United States SIGINT System January 2007 Strategic Mission List
Introduction - Director’s Intent
(S//SI) The SIGINT Strategic Mission List represents the intent of the Director, National Security Agency in regard to mission priorities and risks for the United States S1G1NT System (USSS) over the next 12-18 months The list is derived from review of the Intelligence Community National Intelligence Priorities Framework, DC1/DNI Guidance, the Strategic Warning List, National SIGINT Requirements Process (NSRP) and other strategic planning documents The missions included on the list are in relative priority order and represent the most urgent tasks for the USSS The list is not intended to be all encompassing, but is intended to set forth guidance on the highest priorities.
Topical Missions and Enduring Targets
(S//S1) The SIGINT Strategic Mission List is divided into two parts. It includes 16 critical topical missions in Part I of the list, which represent missions discerned to be areas of highest priority for the USSS, where SIGINT can make key contributions. In addition to the 16 critical topical missions, Part U of the SIGINT Strategic Mission List includes 6 enduring targets that are included due to the need to work these targets holistically because o f their strategic importance. In addition to their long-term strategic importance, the enduring targets can potentially "trump" the highest priority topical missions on the list at any time, based upon evolving world events. Elements o f these targets are also represented throughout the topical target sets. For each of the 16 topical missions and each of the 6 enduring targets the Strategic Mission List includes:
1) Focus Areas- critically important targets against which the SIGINT enterprise is placing emphasis. DIRNSA designation of a target as a focus area constitutes his guidance to the SIGINT System that it is a "must do” target for that mission 2) Accepted Risksstrategically significant targets against which the USSS is not placing emphasis and for which SIGINT should not be relied upon as a primary source. DIRNSA's reasons for accepting these risks include high difficulty and lack of resources or as an “Economy of Force Measure,” in order to achieve focus on the most critical targets
A Strategic Investment Tool for SIGINT Resources
(S//S1) Given a finite level of resources available in all mission areas, the Strategic Mission List provides high-level strategic direction to the global SIGINT system to focus resources on the most important/highest priority areas. “Risks” identify targets that cannot be resourced to the level of a Focus Area, thereby acknowledging that shortfalls will exist. As world circumstances change, these or other targets can be added to the list as needed, targets no longer of critical importance can also be removed from the Focus Area category. In addition, other targets, not listed as focus or risk areas, can also be wrorked by the USSS to a lesser degree to meet other customer requirements. The Strategic Mission List will be reviewedbi- annuallyby the USSS Signals Intelligence leadership Team Missions. Focus areas, and Accepted Risks will be adjusted as a means of providing high-level steerage to the Nation’s agile SIGINT System.

Nice to have a record of all this so it's easier to find later. I might write some more stories about lesser known NSSE features that apply to this impending nightmare if I can find the time. For now...
Quick notes: Lesser-known agencies such as the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency and US Northern Command also get very busy in the domestic battlespace indeed. NSSEs are part of their annual activity cycle of exercises and practice operations.
Having declared the RNC a National Security Special Event (NSSE), one that derived its “authorization” to target activists and journalists from the top secret 2006 National Security Presidential Directive-46/Homeland Security Presidential Directive-15 (NSPD-46/HSPD-15), local, state and federal law enforcement entities, the U.S. military, intelligence agencies such as the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) and corporate partners in the telecommunications industry and elsewhere, preemptively disrupted legal political dissent by a score of protest groups.
A traveling ensemble of artists seeks to rewild the Great Lakes through free outdoor performances.
THE WASTELANDS PROJECT ABANDON ALL DESPAIR, YE WHO ENTER HERE.
The Silent Revolution
Western Civilization is self-destructing all around us, and it’s never looked so under control. Wolf hunts, receding glaciers, the dream of a gardened planet: the ecological crisis spreads across the plains like an endless chain of luxury high rises. We believe there is a light to be found in the dark rows ahead. But to see it, we first need to stretch our imagination.
That's where we enter the Wastelands, an outdoor, traveling live performance about the future of life on Earth.
The Wastelands The Wastelands is a revolutionary art project, loosely based on Dante's Purgatorio, that transcends medium--theatre, music, film, dance, fine art, adventurous travel--from us, an emerging ensemble called Children of the Wild.
From April 20th-May 18th, 2015 we will travel across the Great Lakes in search of people to engage with and locations to bring The Wastelands. Ultimately we aim to uncover the real-life stories of environmental crimes suffered by the Great Lakes Basin. More importantly we seek out the resistance of communities that won't back down until the Lakes are free. Why the Great Lakes? We are living in a watershed moment, so it helps to look at our watershed.
Our mission is to make original works of theatre and film that further the rewilding of the human spirit as part of a common struggle for social and environmental justice. Rewilding TheatreOver the next two years, we are building our show out of and performing in the detritus of this world—ruins of factories, overgrown lots, junk piles that were once industrial parks. We envision being costumed by dust and dirt, ash and burlap; we imagine a set made from found objects; we will travel in an adventurous way (bus or boat) and live as a tribe, in order to open space for what is possible politically and culturally. The film will faithfully document our tour, exposing the in-between places where fiction meets reality. But why go through all that trouble just to tell a story? We believe in order talk about rewilding our souls as well as our environments, we must live it. So the question is, Where do we look to find a landbase reinventing itself in order to survive an almost certain death?
I pitched in with some website work for UGB & Twilight back in the day and I am glad the new project is getting executed. I saw some of the early notes and I think it's really promising.

Another long and productive day with Boulder Flood Relief. In under 72 hours we've:
- Built a volunteer database of over 500 individuals.
- Started work sites with over 30 volunteers on the ground helping homeowners.
- Sent canvassers to affected neighborhoods to assess needs.
- Built information systems that will allow the organization to scale and be transparent to itself (using a combination of open source and cloud based software).
- Began building a peer to peer marketplace of goods and services so folks can self-organize to relieve and recover.
Not bad for three days. If you're in Boulder we invite you to get involved in whatever way you can. Go to our website (www.boulderfloodrelief.org) and register as a volunteer and/or share your needs.
There is much work to be done, and we are the ones to do it.
I see you’ve noticed the underwater wells in Weld County, Colorado. Amazing; we’ve emailed the Denver TV stations, other media, and state and local politicians. We’ve sent pictures that our members have taken. It’s like the media and politicians have been TOLD not to say anything about it. There has been no mention of the gas wells on the Denver newscasts either last night or this evening although all stations have had extensive and extended flood coverage. You can see underwater wells in the background of some of the newscast videos, and yet the reporters say absolutely nothing.
Here’s a picture one of our members took yesterday in Weld County, Colorado. We’ve got tons more on our website. Check it out. The tanks are tipping and, in some cases, have fallen over. They have to be leaking toxins into the flood waters. There have to be hundreds if not thousands of underwater well pads in Weld County as a result of the flooding.
Please publicize this in Texas since our media people and politicians have gone silent!
If you are psychologically and emotionally able...
First watch the aerial footage of the flooding around Boulder and Lyons, Colorado (below). Watch all of it, no matter how difficult that might be.
Then read this quote from this posting about Man-yi:
"Man-yi might also inundate Fukushima, where utility crews are struggling to contain highly radioactive water leaking from and flowing under the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant and into the Pacific Ocean at an estimated rate of 300 tons a day".
Now understand that the earth at Fukshima has already been horribly compromised by flooding -- for two and a half years straight. The reactor buildings are unstable and ready to fall. The unwelded storage tanks are already failing, and the spent fuel pools are teetering above ground with their ever-present threat of an open-air, uncontrolled fission reaction.
Now add rainfall like what has just hit Boulder... Instead of many huge sections of roadway, bridges and buildings falling away into the torrent, picture the reactor buildings, the fuel pools and all the stored super-radioactive water being washed away, either into the sea, or being scattered and dispersed for hundreds, maybe thousands of miles by 50-60-70 mph winds.
And the hardest thing of all to imagine is the fuel pools collapsing in the middle of a tropical storm or typhoon, triggering an open-air reaction in the middle of all that wind.
Forget all of these other times the cliche "The Perfect Storm" has been used before. […..] When highly complex civilizations fail, they fail spectacularly. The cascade of problems becomes its own Fukushima tsunami. […..]
[CO Flood Post] Words are absolutely inadequate to describe this footage. I could not help continually viewing this as a metaphor, a symbolic viewing, of how difficult it will be to address the life-threatening crises that are bearing down so hard with so much infrastructure gone in so many places.
No matter where we are, this is showing us what our world is going to be resembling in the near future, whether as a result of floods, quakes, radiation, lack of maintenance, lack of resources and ultimately lack of will.
As local, immediate survival becomes a priority almost everywhere, our ability to address the larger issues causing these events collapses, evaporates and is gone with the wind.
Let your heart watch this right beside your mind. One way or another, this is the future for all of us, unless we can all unite on the same page, and at the same levels of consciousness.
AFP-JIJI: Typhoon Man-yi heads for Chubu | The Japan Times: "Man-yi might also inundate Fukushima, where utility crews are struggling to contain highly radioactive water leaking from and flowing under the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant and into the Pacific Ocean at an estimated rate of 300 tons a day."
The publication of these notices starts the 75-day public comment period on the Waste DGEIS (http://pbadupws.nrc.gov/docs/ML1322/ML13224A106.pdf) and proposed rule. The public comment period ends on Wednesday, November 27, 2013. Comments received after November 27, 2013, will be considered as practicable. However, the NRC can only guarantee consideration of comments received on or before November 27, 2013.
In addition to presenting oral comments at any of our twelve public meetings, there are many ways to submit written comments on the DGEIS and proposed rule. The NRC gives all comments equal weight, no matter who submits them or how they are submitted. You can submit written comments through any of the methods below.
There is some movie called Pandora's Promise which is more-or-less nuclear industry cheerleading in town with a full blown event going on. People will be nibbling on delicious cesium tainted tea leaves straight from Fukushima Prefecture I would assume. [ https://twitter.com/PandorasPromise ]
Okay let's check out whats the latest in the happy world of Nuclear News. This whole UN report is based on a false premise: Unlike Chernobyl which popped, burned and was contained relatively quickly, Fukushima is not even done leaking yet, and radiation has turned up in fish, fallout across Pacific Northwest. etc.
Akio Matsumura, Diplomat: "Let me clarify. We are facing global disaster — catastrophe — occurring. From that perspective, over 40 years, 50 years, or maybe 100 years. We cannot escape from this fact. …. This radioactive material, or contaminated water, any cases, reach out to your west coast as well. If you are counting on Japan, I can assure you now they do not take serious action."
These are merely some headlines going back to June 5th. This monster is still oozing all over the place and contaminating tons of food and water.
Overall we need to quit building fission related technology, it is a mess on many levels, particularly if any of them are hit by disasters like tsunamis, earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes etc.
Probably a release of energy technology from the military industrial complex, along with winding down energy consumption as much as possible, [aka downshifting civilization before it implodes] would be a good place to start looking at this.
Hang tight folks, it looks like we are on the cusp of another 'burst of change' on a few fronts. You should probably double the watts going to your news radar for at least 10-14 days, if you possibly can. And all those cheesy "financial systems" are getting Extra Discontinuous as they usually do when Collapse starts happening in various segments. I decided to cork out a very rough post on these topics, Your Mileage May Vary thx::
While the Boston situation loaded with symbolism like international flags & the JFK library fire attracts most attention, the reality is that bombings at events are pretty rare and unlikely to happen; once it does the media loops the same traumatizing video clips for web hits. The editorial style: giving viewers agog consciousness that spells ratings. I saw Good Morning America a few mornings ago, it was a massive blitz of domestic violence and a patina of Victoria's Secret models.
President Obama quietly signed legislation Monday that rolled back a provision of the STOCK Act that required high-ranking federal employees to disclose their financial information online.
The White House announced Monday that the president had signed S. 716, which repealed a requirement of the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge (STOCK) Act requiring the disclosure, which had previously been delayed several times by Congress.
That provision, added to the bipartisan bill aimed at halting insider trading by members of Congress, would have required roughly 28,000 senior government officials to post their financial information online, and had come under harsh criticism from federal government employee unions.
Both chambers of Congress quickly — and near silently — approved the repeal legislation at the end of last week by unanimous consent, just before heading home to their districts.
The STOCK Act was signed by the president a little over one year ago in a highly visible signing ceremony, where he said the legislation would tackle the "deficit of trust" that exists between Washington and the rest of the nation.
The new law scraps a provision that had been hotly contested by federal employees, as well as found to be problematic and even dangerous for high-ranking government workers. Congress twice had passed legislation to delay its implementation. Under that provision, high-ranking government workers would have been required to post their financial information on a publicly available online database.
PAPER GOLD BIG MOVES: The gold market is a peculiar misunderstood beast - it's like a bunch of stuff in vaults with IOU's attached to numbered bars. The IOUs underwrite the financial products like Exchange Traded Fund GLD "gold" - it is operated in reference to the underlying gold's supposed value, but it's not actually a contract providing recourse to the gold.
I flagged for some people a few days ago that the COMEX or commodities exchange gold market, as well as JP Morgan, has had large declines in physical gold reserves in the warehouses recently.
Now today a whopping 122 tons of 'paper gold' got flipped around & tons of margin hikes are getting called on gold traders in different markets around the world, forcing people to keep dumping gold in bursts.
"Futures trading is performed on a margined basis.. One fund in particular, based in Stamford Connecticut, was identified as the previous shorter of gold and has a history of being caught on the wrong side of the law on a few occasions. As baddies go - they fit the bill nicely.
......The value of the 400 tonnes of gold sold is approximately $20 billion but because it is margined, this short bet would require them to stump up just $1b. The modest short selling in Jan 2013 had prompted little response from the longs - raising questions about their real commitment. By forcing the market lower the Fund sought to prompt a cascade or avalanche of additional selling, proving the lie ; predictably some newswires were premature in announcing the death of the gold bull run doing, in effect, the dirty work of the shorters in driving the market lower still."
In recent weeks due to Japan's new hyper-loose monetary policy, crazy things have been happening around the Yen's value. (Australia is spiking moar than anything else it seems) Europe also has a new wave of trust destabilizing the banking system with various deals being attempted in Cyprus & Greece.
The DJIA has been flying high above all of this, though even the corporate news points out that this whole phase of asset value inflation is at least partially due to the Fed's loose monetary policy. Housing prices are "up" they say, what could possibly go wrong?
It's pretty sick meanwhile that an incredibly high level of food stamps are the formal basis for America's food security, at around 23,000,000 households and rising. When Obama entered office this was less than 15,000,000 households -- and the benefits per household are slowly being cut along with much of the social safety net programs both in Minnesota and nationwide. US Households On Foodstamps Hit Record High | Zero Hedge. USDA data.
This is a consequence of bailing out banks with trillions of dollars, collateralizing the American people and introducing tons of sovereign credit risk into the US Dollar, the Euro & beyond. It has altered the "biopolitics" of the US to the point that this many people cannot handle generating economic activity in this system to keep themselves alive - and clearly the amount parceled out is declining fast.
CSA's [relatively cheap & nutritious food share subscriptions] and local barter-based currencies are among the more resilient network ideas that ought to get looked at right now. I think there is a pretty severe risk to the stability of the whole country (let alone world) when food stamp debit card systems keep that many millions of families from starving. If nothing else there needs to be fallback systems from the US Dollar & conventional banking system may abruptly halt or radically shift in value or stability. This is something people need to start getting their heads around - so that if the debit cards stop working, different ones operating on some other basis (ie local currencies) can be handed out & millions aren't put in such imminent danger. (see DepressionScrip.com for 1930s substitute local credit instruments - key!)
The food stamp debit cards are usually administered by big banks - giving them yet another lever of functions to 'terrorize' elected officials and bureaucrats into further handing over all the nation's "commons" through fraud & socially constructed economic schemes. The banks have probably the biggest, quickest "kill switch" on social stability. A trivial switch for them to hit compared to most!!
Bitcoin had a big run-up for several days and now has retreated somewhere into the $50-100 range - for a good time keep an eye on Bitcoin Charts. Still, it seems like there's more than enough demand to keep it above $40. However the Bitcoin economy suffers from overly concentrated exchanges.
The biggest exchange, MtGox, has such a large market share - and can't keep up once really huge, shady order floods come in, that the whole Bitcoin economy tends to get "goxxed" and bog down, panic selling and various cats stepping in to buy all the way down.
I am doing a lot of research on Bitcoin right now including the various exchanges (LIST) - in the long run, Bitcoin and other alternative cryptocurrencies share certain features like peer-to-peer encryption/hashing based universal linear transaction registers called "blockchains", and ways of verifying those blockchains with CPU or GPU intensive cryptographic calculations to award more 'coins' and slowly expand the money supply while shoring up trust in the global account ledger.
Bitcoin OTC order book is a chat network approach to decentralized exchange design with trust ranking (like eBay rankings in a way).
Good news for people interesting in making exchanges or intercambios in the form of Ripple, in the early stages an open source project with VC backing to build multi-currency exchanges and trust networks among peers. (chart) Some open source software is available on GitHub for Ripple and its "XRP" intermediary currency, which could then be a proxy to regular fiats or Bitcoin etc.
In February, one of the DHS’s more persistent naysayers, U.S. Representative John Mica, a Florida Republican, boasted about how he and his fellow party members had curtailed the project. He said he would also like to dismantle much of the DHS.
He’d better act swiftly. If the White House ever gets all the DHS’s divisions on one campus, nobody will want to move them again.
Homeland Security bloat and the great Unemployed: Word went around that ICE was serving a federal warrant pertaining to Boston. ICE is a unit of Department Homeland Security which spawned the little known HSI, or Homeland Security Investigations, division, a new kind of (literal) black helicopter FBI-style agency
I'm not even going to get into the stuff coming up about the bomb sniffing dogs and weird "training exercise" angles right now because this other stuff seems more pertinent right now. People that have been at this a long time frequently bump into "exercises" that happen to overlap with 'live events', the argument being many times that exercises created the opportunity for staged events at many previous key points -- though of course governments do run a *lot* of exercises with all their security bloatware anyway.
This is the late 2012 Hagmann interview with a purported Homeland Security "insider" which stated that a dip in precious metals, after the fiscal cliff sets the stage, would presage further economic chaos and an escalation of repression against the American people, along with a major collapse in standard of living. DHS Insider Report: Coming This Spring: "Life for the Average American is Going to Change Significantly". It is kind of "classic stuff" for those of us that keep an eye on these things. The earlier predictions of source "Rosebud" didn't really pan out much in 2012, as these things often don't. But timelines are hard to nail down even for "deep weird" sources with good faith. Take a little while to glance over this, even if it's not your usual fare.
"Rosebud": Stop thinking about a normal situation. The country is divided, which is exactly where Obama wants us to be. We are as ideologically divided as we were during the Civil War and that rift is growing every day. Add in a crisis – and economic crisis – where ATM and EBT cards will stop working. Where bank accounts will contain nothing but air. They are anticipating a revolution and a civil war rolled into one (emphasis added by this author).
We all saw what happened with the Feds & Occupy camps. The American Occupy-style organizing eased off as the US economy was in a kind of stasis during 2012, but if things tense up in 2013 we are looking at a different political situation. In Europe things have been moving at a much different tempo, along with a great deal of confusion, snaky liberal operations, and a rising neofascist & quasi-fascist network is taking root in many nations.
Anyway this is just a few trends happening now... I feel like the overall tone of this post is pretty conservative, as a lot of the research is coming out of places with that editorial slant. Nonetheless these are sources of information and lines of analysis that anyone is welcome to look at and come to their own conclusions.
I think that we urgently need to get real and start considering lots of alternate solutions, hopefully to avoid more authoritarian and crisis driven, panicky policies, like those fostered in the climate of the Fear of Terrorism which they are going to tediously lay on with a trowel for weeks, alongside major economic instability.
>>> #NOT ANOTHER KATRINA <<< Contrary to what might be inferred by a media and government blackout - Rockaway IS. NOT. RECOVERING.
We can't stress this enough. It looks like parts of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.
Residents are being told they will receive NO assistance, no food, no medicine, NOTHING if they remain in Rockaway
As of a few hours ago Occupy Sandy Relief has a community hub up and running at Beach 113th Street and Rockaway Blvd. We are distributing lights, clothing, blankets and warm food.
DO NOT ARRIVE AT NIGHT! We will be open and ready for more volunteers and supplies tomorrow morning.
- More photos, need lists and stories to come
The whole situation in the east coast is really rough right now. I'm going to post copies of these pads right now in the hopes of circulating some material. This should prove once and for all that "preppers" have an important role to play in avoiding total disaster -- but of course in these circumstances it takes all of us working together. Where the various levels of government are totally messed up, people are making things happen in a horizontal way, covering emergency basic needs and anchoring anxious communities.
Hope it helps, there are a lot of places to plug in & postal addresses accepting supplies if nothing else....
People looking for something to do might want to check out #HurricaneHackers. Sandy CrisisCamp | CrisisCommons. Also Ushahidi is being used for crowd mapping services . EFF believes open networks are crucial in hurricane-affected areas
Update: In response to the impact of Hurricane Sandy, Comcast is opening its XFINITY WiFi hotspots to non-Comcast subscribers in PA, NJ, DE, MD, DC, VA, WV, MA, NH and ME until Nov. 7. Users should search for the network "xfinitywifi" and click on "Not a Comcast subscriber?" at the bottom of the sign-in page. Users should select the "Complimentary Trial Session" option from the drop down list. TheOpen Wireless Movement thanks Comcast for helping out!
In troubled times, it's important to help each other out. Right now, we're witnessing an unprecedented hurricane hitting the Eastern Seaboard of the United States, and the ensuing damage and power outages are crippling rescue efforts, businesses large and small, and personal communications.
Communication is critical in time of crisis, and the Internet allows for the most effective way of getting information in and out. With readily available networks, government officials could use tools like Twitter to quickly spread information, citizen reports could help focus assistance where it is needed most, and social media updates could help reassure friends and loved ones—keeping mobile phone lines open for emergencies.
To take advantage of the Internet, people should not have to attempt to skirt restrictive Terms of Service to attempt to tether their smartphones. And tethering would not be necessary if there were ubiquitous open wireless, so that anyone with a connection and power can share their network with the neigborhood.
Last year, we wrote a post titled "Why We Need An Open Wireless Movement." Today, EFF is proud to announce the launch of the Open Wireless Movement—located at openwireless.org—a coalition effort put forth in conjunction with nine other organizations: Fight for the Future, Free Press, Internet Archive, NYCwireless, the Open Garden Foundation, OpenITP, the Open Spectrum Alliance, the Open Technology Institute, and the Personal Telco Project.
What can you do with social media and online tools for your neighbors who make up your local community?
As we move from emergency response to long-term recovery, here are some collective tips from the“locals online” community(join your peers for tips and advice).
People matter more than tools.Don’t spend hours searching for the perfect tool, if you are willing to step up for your building, your block, your broader neighborhood or community, etc. it is your leadership that matters. Combining your willingness to digitally organize your neighbors with the best social media toolsfor you- be it compiling a cc: e-mail group of forty households or creating online groups using the latest social media tool for thousands - what matters most is your energy and dedication to reach out to your neighbors in every way possible.Be an e-leader for your community. You won’t regret it.
Tools do matter.Pick your social media tools carefully and think about what your neighbors will actually use. Even if you are the right person with good communication skills and the ability to quickly establish trust among those neighbors you gather online, picking the wrong tool or relying on a single tool may not work. Just because a tool has great visual design or all the fancy features does not mean it will work with people stuck on smart phones for example who just prefer to use e-mail, Facebook, etc.
Gather email addresses, mobile phone numbers, and other contact information first.Having email addresses and mobile phones numbers in your possession allow you to actively reach people. The ability to “broadcast” to your nearest neighbors with full control over when, who, etc. matters particularly if you want to reach older residents who do not “live on Facebook.” With complete control over the distribution of important information, this allows you to use different tools and approaches without being locked in by a single website. Here is apaper sign-up templateyou can adapt.
Connect people horizontally by creating an online group for your local building/block/neighborhood/community.Name it by your place generally so it can last over the long-term as a space for neighbor connecting so you are better prepared for the next disaster. Invite people to join - often in-person, on paper flyers, etc. as well as online. Remember that the technology is the easy part.Be as inclusive as possibleand don’t forget renters and lower income residents. Here are some tools to review (someone please draft and a add link). Note: Some neighborhoods still have thriving YahooGroups from a decade ago, a local “place blog” with an active web forum, etc. - join forces with them rather than recreating the wheel. Do a quick search (links to come). Some tools:
Facebook Groups:If you want to use Facebook, create aFacebookGroup not a Facebook Page. Facebook Pages are a terrible tool for sustained group communication. Note that at about 150 members in a group, Facebook switches the default email notification setting to only send you notices when your friends posts. This is a negative, but Facebook is still a good way to quickly gather people online. You can always add the use of other tools later. Facebook Groups are better for smaller areas, but don’t scale well “community participation” wise because of the hidden notification issue. Two more concerns - the public officials you want to respond to your exchanges are often blocked from social media at work and by choosing Facebook at the core you’ve eliminated half the Internet users over 50. If you have older folks on your block that you want to include, this means you need to reach then another way. Therefore do not underestimate the simple power of an effective email list to break through computer firewalls.
E-mail lists:YahooGroups, Google Groups, and more. Note that you need to use tools like Mailman or others IF you want to be able to use paper sign-up sheets as the big online hosts no longer allow you to “add” people. Now you may only invite them which means lots will not click on the confirmation link. For a “social media maven,” paper sign-up sheets for e-mail lists may seem old fashioned but this is exactly what the Presidential campaigns do - collect e-mail and Zipcode everywhere and then communication build from there. They wouldn’t do it if it didn’t work. E-Democracy goesdoor to door with the neighbors online effortsin St. Paul. It works to reach lots of people who aren’t already among the most wired or most socially connected.
NextDoor, .St, Others
Pick your scale and openness. You need to decide if you want to organize 30 households or connect an area with hundreds or thousands of residents. At the building or block level you probably want private online spaces while covering full neighborhoods you want to be far more open and inclusive. You want your public exchanges to be easy to find and open to local community organizations, places of worship, local businesses and government. You are all in this together and private resident-only spaces covering population areas over ~1000 residents will absolutely limit your success and potentially lead to greater community conflict. If you are are focusing on your nearest neighbors ovef a few streets or in your building, here is a roughGoogle Doc templateyou can copy and adapt orview as a sample form.
Twitter can be useful for spontaneous networking and quick dissolution of group connections. On Twitter use hyper-local hashtags using #place or #placeXX at a level that isn’t too local so you can reach a critical mass and not so large that it is not useful for exchange.
Specialty Tools for Response/Recovery: Recovers.org, Ushahidi
Interaction matters. The government and media will feed you lots of one-way information, but when it comes to very local information your neighbors are both the producers and consumers. No matter the tool, the key is email notification where participants can at least be told about what's new and better yet publish via e-mail as well to the community. If you are going to be that local e-leader, the most important thing to do once you choose your tool is to organize people and spread the word in-person.
Add you own, re-order, etc.
This article is informed byE-Democracy.org 18 years of experience with local online community buildingincluding our failed experience with support local“neighbours forums” in Christchurch, New Zealand after there big earthquake. In short, supporting two regional volunteers we skipped our “you must have a local volunteer forum leader and 100 initial members in place to open” requirement. The desperate need for communication to assist community recovery did not generate local volunteers even with 1000 participants recruited but spread out over 25 forums. So, in short the real world lesson is that no block, building, neighborhood or community will successfully connect in a trusted community building manner without at least one person in that area stepping up an an authentically local leader.

Overall it resembles a video news release designed to make us feel comfortable with lining up for shots at the FEMA/Red Cross center -- that's the whole catharsis at the end basically. Thanks to Cryptogon for the tip on this film!
But weirdly, a whole vision of wintertime midwest social collapse goes down in my general neighborhood -- Minneapolis to the Martial Law-lockdown Wisconsin border!
The Minneapolis Armory downtown is transformed into a pandemic doomcenter!
It's kind of an initiation into USNORTHCOM CONPLAN 2591 for Dummies: Line up You Crazed Minnesotans! It's NCIS: Team Bacteria, basically plodding dialogue rarely gets any humor catharsis.
It's too bad this stolid film could have been so sardonic – come on, with Fargo you've got a real Minnesota film. Even though few shots except say the downtown Armory actually appeared to be shot here. Still, the blue light & Thanksgiving-Xmas interval of complete doom bore the mark of a dark winter experience. Still this film needed humor -- they just couldn't put much in at all.
Quickly in Minnesota, panic and total social collapse sets in at martial food distribution ops and the grocery store.
Army trucks all over downtown in the morning hours:
Martial law is setup at the Minnesota/Wisconsin border -- closed by the Wisconsin National Guard. Not filmed in Stillwater but should have been. I actually made a sketch of similar Wi/Mn border bridge freakout one time -- this film has it all!
Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) deserves far more credit than the obligatory "baffled public official" exposition scene. They're actually very good at tracing outbreaks -- E Coli strains in industrial food for example -- but get zero credit really. Except for a You-Betcha-Bubble-Suit-Next-to-Mass-Graves type moment.
No one is really portrayed solving things cleverly except Fishburne's people. Will this look kind of like a Duck-And-Cover propaganda film in 50 years? "Cheating" or taking risks bending the rules is peculiarly rewarded -- i.e scientist with Biohazard Level 3 lab still finds the virus growth medium after they try ordering him to shut down.
Jude Law is a pigeonholed as conspiracy disease blogger and you never ultimately see if he's a shady fear profiteer. By the end he's painted as vaguely pitching profitable homeopathic cure for a possible hedge fund payoff. The hedge fund turns him in to Homeland Security. Doesn't make sense. He's left filming silently people lining up at a Red Cross/FEMA arena as they peacefully await shots like lambs.
Even as masked pillagers go through "suburban Minneapolis" in no sense are neighbors considered to be banding together in Minnesota -- though in China a whole village tries to hold the health scientist Cotillard hostage for vaccines.
It felt like there'd been battles over the script. Something about the way that the plots were stubbed out...
Adjuvants get a mention as needed to really get the immune response kicked into action. Delicious thimerosol win! (of course high levels of gross damaging adjuvants are needed because frequently vaccines are weak failsauce)
Just-in-time commercial inventory spells direct social fail: Surprise! I felt like the kind of preparation which local organization like the U of M's top notch Center for Infectious Disease Research & Policy which advises better supply chain strategies during dangerous pandemics. The pandemic supply chain fail basically leads straight to pandemonium in Minnesota.
There's no real sense of proper preparation -- a lack of creativity here. Actor Bryan Cranston as the military guy was pretty good.
-- the crucial clue on Paltrow's camera -- Damon finally notices month later. Seriously they never found this earlier?
-- if they point out that fatality level from malnutrition is variable to nutrition, they could have promoted vitamin D but didn't
-- You get vaccinated == Arm Band seemed like prescripting or an introduction, as well as catharsis in plot!
-- At least no one gets chipped (altho vaccine fans will point out you can hide unique signatures in vaccine fluid)
-- No real 'mitigating' approach - be it neighborhood security radio or taking more vitamins -- no one is really creative outside of the government
-- Dr. Sanjay Gupta - CNN, NBC/Comcast KARE 11 are the media snippets. Gupta mediates the Fishburne/Law throwdown between CDC & Conspiracybloggers.
-- Chinese cooks hug western executive while greasy with pig guts fresh from the Chinese interior.
-- People coughing in the theater are scary!
-- Big FEMA Red Cross polite line of vaccine recipients is the catharsis "landing" basically
I didn't bother to stick around and look at the thank-yous to see who was involved in production. The way that it feels like you're mainly plodding, tumbling through the CDC's cogs reminded me of another similar film The Next Three Days wherein Russell Crowe triggers off similar National Security machinations. Hell the new Transformers movie has the military as a major character collectively. It just doesn't make the stories move along to cover all these institutions and their fictionally presented wonderful operations.
This site is promoted on the trailer -- it doesn't even mention Minneapolis after all this trouble!
Matt Damon gits a shotgun which weirdly wasn't looted from his neighbors -- while the food was.
Chicago gets the martial law treatment like the FEMA Region V headquarters it is.
Homeland Security Guy always seems like a douche but He Means Well.
Dimitri Martin handles yr viruses
I think this scene was cut? Or was I not paying attention.
Obligatory red blooming map
That about covers it. I always wash my hands and try to avoid touching my face. Minnesota is kind-of used to this stuff so I rather resent we are now portrayed as the exemplars of public panic!
Riots are about power, and they are about catharsis..... No one expected this. The so-called leaders who have taken three solid days to return from their foreign holidays to a country in flames did not anticipate this. The people running Britain had absolutely no clue how desperate things had become. They thought that after thirty years of soaring inequality, in the middle of a recession, they could take away the last little things that gave people hope, the benefits, the jobs, the possibility of higher education, the support structures, and nothing would happen. They were wrong. And now my city is burning, and it will continue to burn until we stop the blanket condemnations and blind conjecture and try to understand just what has brought viral civil unrest to Britain. Let me give you a hint: it ain’t Twitter.
If nothing else, the paternalistic spin machine of social control which forms the kernel of the BBC is revealed perfectly here. Obviously Darcus Howe is perhaps the only person who deserves to be prime minister of the United Kingdom. If nothing else listening to this stunningly offensive & privileged BBC host disrespect an "old West Indian Negro" frames the whole damn scenario going on. Howe appeared earlier on a video about the 1981 anti-Thatcher/police riots.
The waves of riots sweeping England are probably subsiding for now, but the ground has definitely shifted. This is what happens when you keep making the rich richer and the poor poorer. No amount of riot police, surveillance, social control or even drugging can fully contain what happens (sorry Huxley). You can't stack sand vertically. It always crumbles chaotically to a certain maximum slope. Societies always destabilize beyond certain inequality levels, and "catharsis events" and moments of insurrection are major moments for the sand grains to topple.
Politics - or rather the political industry - has nothing to offer these young Britons. Isn't the "apolitical" "selfish" message of the riots a message that politics isn't even worth owning or capturing, that the Tory HQ is really unworthy of even bothering with?
And the many reactions tell as much as the riot, don't they? Being angry, or excited, or casting "condemnation" or whatever about this is like condemning the weather, it's like demanding the tide go back out.
It's unfortunate that brinkmanship in the form of riots and related stuff damages local communities; it's unfortunate the nominally "pro-business" Republicans destroyed America's AAA credit rating. Both events are pointless on the surface, sure, but they happen these days because no one is "delivering the goods" in our declining Western-dominated political/economic systems. (More links below, as unrest emits from the West's DoomBanking vortices, spreading East)
The Tory classes and the Daily Mail types are JPMorgue furious and totally don't care that bankers do far more damage in an invisible fashion all the time. Taking offense from these petulant scum, hurrrrmph:
While the entire global economy, especially the tottering EU currency regime & assorted government bonds destabilize, everyone with a nice job is basically on vacation across Europe. Thus *all of them* have to decide to Fly Back Early from Tuscany -- or in London Tory Mayor Boris Johnson's (below) case, Canada.
Some high-grade Classic Tut-Tuttery & Off With Their Heads below...
Meanwhile in America the steady collapse of living standards has brought food stamp distribution to an all time high -- the essential "bread" part of the "bread & circuses" social control system.
London Calling Link Dump! I don't really agree or disagree with any of these links. I'll put in the decidedly racist DailyMail rhetoric and the insurrectionary anarchists, you can sort it out. Consider them shards of a confused clusterfail. My friend put it best that the City of London wasn't going to get any trouble... Sounds true.
Already, the internet is teeming with racist vitriol and wild speculation. The truth is that very few people know why this is happening. They don’t know, because they were not watching these communities. Nobody has been watching Tottenham since the television cameras drifted away after the Broadwater Farm riots of 1985. Most of the people who will be writing, speaking and pontificating about the disorder this weekend have absolutely no idea what it is like to grow up in a community where there are no jobs, no space to live or move, and the police are on the streets stopping-and-searching you as you come home from school. The people who do will be waking up this week in the sure and certain knowledge that after decades of being ignored and marginalised and harassed by the police, after months of seeing any conceivable hope of a better future confiscated, they are finally on the news. In one NBC report, a young man in Tottenham was asked if rioting really achieved anything:
"Yes," said the young man. "You wouldn't be talking to me now if we didn't riot, would you?"
"Two months ago we marched to Scotland Yard, more than 2,000 of us, all blacks, and it was peaceful and calm and you know what? Not a word in the press. Last night a bit of rioting and looting and look around you."
Eavesdropping from among the onlookers, I looked around. A dozen TV crews and newspaper reporters interviewing the young men everywhere ‘’’
WMR's British intelligence sources report that the rioting sweeping London and other British cities, including Liverpool, Birmingham, and Manchester appears to be "well-coordinated." WMR has learned that some rioters with sophisticated radio communications systems are very organised, in some cases as in Clapham, south London, and in Birmingham, there is no police presence. Rioters are resorting to the same use of social networking services, such as Facebook and Twitter, that was seen in George Soros-financed "themed revolutions" in eastern Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.
The rioting broke out when police shot and killed an unarmed black youth named Mark Duggan. Soon, riots broke out in Tottenham, Edmonton, Brixton, and other London neighborhoods. Intelligence on such rioting was not passed to senior British government officials, many of whom were on holiday for the month of August. The word from a senior British intelligence source is "Her Majesty's Government has been completely blind-sided."
Police are being accused of withholding intelligence on the rioting now spreading throughout England and of allowing the rioters to get out of control by standing down. WMR has been informed that NSA's British counterpart, the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) in Cheltenham, has been ordered to conduct widespread surveillance of riot leaders and police. British intelligence wants to know if there has been any collusion between the rioters and the police in an effort to stage a retaliatory operation for the exposure of police involvement in the wiretapping operations of Rupert Murdoch's News International papers in London, including the News of the World and The Sun.
London's top police officials resigned after it was determined that police were sharing wiretap and other personal data with Murdoch's reporters and editors.
Some senior British government officials have even suggested the rioting spreading through London may be part of a coup attempt.
In addition, the last four days has seen one of the worst financial meltdowns on the London financial markets.
London riots. Lots of the activity going on in London is based on open source warfare precepts. Much more going on here than a simple riot or looting. It's a learning lab. Communicating via BlackBerry instant-message technology that the police have struggled to monitor, as well as by social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, they repeatedly signaled fresh target areas to those caught up in the mayhem. They coupled their grasp of digital technology with the ability to race through London’s clogged traffic on bicycles and mopeds, creating what amounted to flying squads that switched from one scene to another in the London districts of Hackney, Lewisham, Clapham, Peckham, Croydon, Woolwich and Enfield, among others — and even, late on Monday night, at least minor outbreaks in the mainly upscale neighborhood of Notting Hill and parts of Camden.
This dynamic is similar to that seen up close at 2009 G20 in Pittsburgh - quick moving squads vs much slower, truck & gas burdened police squads suffering intelligence failures. Major OODA loop dynamics in play that need to be studied carefully by all!
Ratigan: "I have been coming on TV for 3 years doing this and the fact of the matter is that there is a refusal on both the Republican and Democratic side of the aisle to acknowledge the mathematical problem, which is that the United States of America is being EXTRACTED - it's being extracted through banking, it's being extracted through trade, and it's being extracted through taxation and there's not a single politician that is willing to step forward and deal with this."
Pharmafail: the mysterious microscope-looking thing in the new Hongpong banner is a Rife telescope which can spot viruses: Suppressed Health Technology. Use frequencies to cook out cancer cells? Impossible!! BAN IT!
Spat among whistleblowers: A rather sketchy digression between Robert MacLean (formerly a TSA air marshal) and Julia Davis (formerly a Homeland Security apparatchik). Davis wrote a really negative piece on MacLean and he's ticked. I don't think it's appropriate for Davis to put this kind of stuff out there without bothering to do an interview with MacLean. Both sides have points to make but I would not like to see Davis on Whistleblower patrol. POGO supports Robert MacLean: Homeland Security Whistleblower.
Overall I think Davis needs to loosen up & MacLean needs to chill. Problem?
The trend is unmissable - every single intervention (that of the Fed included) has progressively little impact as these desperate measures, traditionally reserved for life or death situations, and which are supposed to bring the element of surprise with them, are now not only not surprising, but demanded every single day, and if absent, cause asset sell offs. Pretty soon the battlefield will be central planners vs HFTs, with the money printers issuing money at first on a monthly, then weekly, daily, hourly, then lastly millisecond-ly, and ultimately constant basis, at which point it will truly be too late to buy gold.
In Afghanistan the 'Seal Six' craft evidently went down... everyone killed in action there are now called "NATO troops" instead of Americans. Heavily armed Multi-Jurisdiction FoodControl Swat teams step in to shut down & crush the Rawesome Foods outlet in Venice CA as our friendly local industrial food monolith Cargill has millions pounds of ground turkey recalled -- weeks after regulators realized something was up. Clearly the regulatory capture in FDA & related authorities has spun pretty far out of control. No one is ever going to swat raid Cargill. That's the game, people.
And of course stability is taking a huge leg down this week. It's always hard to get the timing with these things, but it's pretty clear that thangs are getting worse fast. If you hasn't already, try to cash out of the American & European stock market while you still can. Get rolling, know your neighbors, readjust for a different life. Minnesota in particular is a hard place and they're right, it's going to be a hard winter here. (Video: good interview w Gerald Celente)
Overall it has occurred to me there should really just be weekly public meetings about collapse & responses in as many places as possible. This is really pretty bad.
One of the things about the recent Minnesota government shutdown was that childcare was really a mess as the state childcare credits were cut off. Let's say that the economy takes another major dive like 20% with a lot more layoffs & people with jobs are stretched thin. If people have a better way of obtaining childcare available then they are more likely to be able to hang onto their jobs or be capable of taking new ones.
I don't really know if I can follow through but I think it would be helpful. At collapse meetings, might also help to adding an online channel for live video (ie skype or livestream or google+ hangouts or whatever it's called) would probably be a good idea -- possibly also a phone line to call into.
We are seeing positive trends a bit in Minneapolis for food security as urban farming becomes a possibility, but the nettlesome regulatory & zoning parts of city government will surely take longer than winter 2011 to actually permit things, I bet. :(
Mpls fluoride toxifies foods! Another issue is that city tapwater is fluoridated, which means that the disgusting toxic additive will accumulate in vegetables! What happens to veggies when they get this toxic crud into their cells? Mpls has either Fluorosilicic acid or Sodium fluorosilicate added... the city budget is trashed & they're going to make layoffs. Hey City: Quit fluoridating! Damn state mandate! One idea: call a special session to suspend as many mandates as possible :-|
