Another long and productive day with Boulder Flood Relief. In under 72 hours we've:

- Built a volunteer database of over 500 individuals.

- Started work sites with over 30 volunteers on the ground helping homeowners.

- Sent canvassers to affected neighborhoods to assess needs.

- Built information systems that will allow the organization to scale and be transparent to itself (using a combination of open source and cloud based software).

- Began building a peer to peer marketplace of goods and services so folks can self-organize to relieve and recover.

Not bad for three days. If you're in Boulder we invite you to get involved in whatever way you can. Go to our website (www.boulderfloodrelief.org) and register as a volunteer and/or share your needs.

There is much work to be done, and we are the ones to do it.

The OOZE: It's almost like drilling and fracking willy-nilly could set the stage for complex or compound environmental disasters. Colorado Floods Causing Fracking Spills?: Natural and Human-made Disasters Portend Future of Toxic Catastrophe | Earth First! Newswire

Is there a media blackout on the fracking flood disaster in Colorado? From an email:

I see you’ve noticed the underwater wells in Weld County, Colorado. Amazing; we’ve emailed the Denver TV stations, other media, and state and local politicians. We’ve sent pictures that our members have taken. It’s like the media and politicians have been TOLD not to say anything about it. There has been no mention of the gas wells on the Denver newscasts either last night or this evening although all stations have had extensive and extended flood coverage. You can see underwater wells in the background of some of the newscast videos, and yet the reporters say absolutely nothing.

Here’s a picture one of our members took yesterday in Weld County, Colorado. We’ve got tons more on our website. Check it out. The tanks are tipping and, in some cases, have fallen over. They have to be leaking toxins into the flood waters. There have to be hundreds if not thousands of underwater well pads in Weld County as a result of the flooding.

Please publicize this in Texas since our media people and politicians have gone silent!

Fukushima could get flooded once again by Typhoon Man-yi, but perhaps they will have a lucky break. Typhoon hits Japan - fears for Fukushima plant - World - NZ Herald News. Tracking map URL next 12 hours are the Big Deal: http://www.wunderground.com/hurricane/western-pacific/2013/Tropical-Stor...

Commentary from Michael C Ruppert:

If you are psychologically and emotionally able...

First watch the aerial footage of the flooding around Boulder and Lyons, Colorado (below). Watch all of it, no matter how difficult that might be.

Then read this quote from this posting about Man-yi:

"Man-yi might also inundate Fukushima, where utility crews are struggling to contain highly radioactive water leaking from and flowing under the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant and into the Pacific Ocean at an estimated rate of 300 tons a day".

Now understand that the earth at Fukshima has already been horribly compromised by flooding -- for two and a half years straight. The reactor buildings are unstable and ready to fall. The unwelded storage tanks are already failing, and the spent fuel pools are teetering above ground with their ever-present threat of an open-air, uncontrolled fission reaction.

Now add rainfall like what has just hit Boulder... Instead of many huge sections of roadway, bridges and buildings falling away into the torrent, picture the reactor buildings, the fuel pools and all the stored super-radioactive water being washed away, either into the sea, or being scattered and dispersed for hundreds, maybe thousands of miles by 50-60-70 mph winds.

And the hardest thing of all to imagine is the fuel pools collapsing in the middle of a tropical storm or typhoon, triggering an open-air reaction in the middle of all that wind.

Forget all of these other times the cliche "The Perfect Storm" has been used before. […..] When highly complex civilizations fail, they fail spectacularly. The cascade of problems becomes its own Fukushima tsunami. […..]

[CO Flood Post] Words are absolutely inadequate to describe this footage. I could not help continually viewing this as a metaphor, a symbolic viewing, of how difficult it will be to address the life-threatening crises that are bearing down so hard with so much infrastructure gone in so many places.

No matter where we are, this is showing us what our world is going to be resembling in the near future, whether as a result of floods, quakes, radiation, lack of maintenance, lack of resources and ultimately lack of will.

As local, immediate survival becomes a priority almost everywhere, our ability to address the larger issues causing these events collapses, evaporates and is gone with the wind.

Let your heart watch this right beside your mind. One way or another, this is the future for all of us, unless we can all unite on the same page, and at the same levels of consciousness.

Neat poem:

Shine, Republic by Robinson Jeffers

The quality of these trees, green height; of the sky, shining, of

water, a clear flow; of the rock, hardness

And reticence: each is noble in its quality. The love of freedom

has been the quality of Western man.

There is a stubborn torch that flames from Marathon to Concord,

its dangerous beauty binding three ages

Into one time; the waves of barbarism and civilization have

eclipsed but have never quenched it.

For the Greeks the love of beauty, for Rome of ruling; for the

present age the passionate love of discovery;

But in one noble passion we are one; and Washington, Luther,

Tacitus, Aeschylus, one kind of man.

And you, America, that passion made you. You were not born

to prosperity, you were born to love freedom.

You did not say 'en masse,' you said 'independence.' But we

cannot have all the luxuries and freedom also.

Freedom is poor and laborious; that torch is not safe but hungry,

and often requires blood for its fuel.

You will tame it against it burn too clearly, you will hood it

like a kept hawk, you will perch it on the wrist of Caesar.

But keep the tradition, conserve the forms, the observances, keep

the spot sore. Be great, carve deep your heel-marks.

The states of the next age will no doubt remember you, and edge

their love of freedom with contempt of luxury.

The Britam Defense Leak involving a Syria chemical weapons plan is denied, but perhaps one of those things like a Project Northwoods about the Syrian Chemical Weapons scenario: (Northwoods was an infamous JFK-era doc from the Joint Chiefs suggesting a fake attack involving Cubans and hijacked planes.)

Britam Defence, David Goulding and Philip Doughty | Mail Online - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/article-2311199/Britam-Defence-David-Goulding-Philip-Doughty.html PUBLISHED: 12:59 EST, 18 April 2013 | UPDATED: 12:59 EST, 18 April 2013

An article on 29 January reported allegations on the internet that the US Government had backed a plot to launch a chemicals weapons attack in Syria and blame it on the Assad regime.

The reports made reference to an email said to have been from David Goulding, the Business Development Director of Britam Defence, to company founder, Philip Doughty. The email had been published on the internet after Britam’s computer system was illegally hacked in Singapore. It referred to a proposal that Britam would deliver chemical weapons to Syria for enormous financial reward and suggested that the directors were willing to consider the illegal proposal.

We now accept that email was fabricated and acknowledge there is no truth in any suggestion that Britam or its directors were willing to consider taking part in such a plot, which may have led to an atrocity.

We apologise to each of them and have agreed to pay substantial damages.

A Look into the Britam Defence Data Leak Files && britam defence hacked, confidential documents leaked, site offline - cyberwarnews.info

A British defence company has been breached and as a result a heap of documents have been published online and now the site has gone offline.

The attack is on britam defence (http://www.britamdefence.com/) and has been claimed by a hacker using the handle JAsIrX who uploaded the leaked information to various file sharing websites and released it via a single pastebin post with the a message about the release (see bottom).

The documents come in 6 parts and total over 423MB compress zip files and inside the compress files appears to be a common layout of three main folders named !!Syria, Iran and Iraq.

Inside these appear to be documents like passports, incident reports about drunk employees which are labelled private and confidential as well.

A quick look into the files shows shocking plans for chemical warfare attacks where they have planned to lure victims to kill zones. The file can be found in the Iran folder under OPLAN (Ruhayyat) 1433H-1.doc.

Also worth noting this! Iraq uncovers al-Qaeda 'chemical weapons plot' BBC News June, 1 2013, and this RT report on the Turkish authorities discovery of Sarin in a Jabhat al Nusra safehouse http://youtu.be/vet0PV-XPlw in May 2013.

Reported by RT in May and firmly in the memory hole right now: 2 kilograms of sarin captured with rebels in Turkey?! WTF

Published on May 31, 2013 RussiaToday: Suspected Syrian militants have reportedly been detained in Turkey with a cylinder of highly poisonous sarin gas found in their possession. Those arrested are believed to be members of the Al-Qaeda linked Al-Nusra Front. Earlier this month, UN investigators voiced suspicion the nerve agent was being used by opposition fighters. RT's Middle East correspondent Paula Slier reports.

Obviously RT has a Russian perspective here but indeed as we will see this is not the only clue floating around about Al-Nusra & chemical weapons.

DC alternative journalist Wayne Madsen is not always correct but this particular narrative just smells really damn likely right now. R2P is "responsibility to protect" interventionist faction of Beltway, the newest iteration of "cruise missile liberals" more-or-less. Go get em Wayne:

SOURCE: http://www.waynemadsenreport.com/articles/20130901

September 1-2, 2013 -- Special Weekend Report. Washington, DC (WMR) Obama caved under last-minute pressure from Dempsey

WMR's White House sources report that on the evening of Friday, August 29, President Obama was on track to launch a sustained 72-hour cruise missile and drone attack on pre-selected air defense and other strategic military targets in Syria.

Obama had been convinced by his national security adviser Susan Rice, UN ambassador Samantha Power, and deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes, all "Responsibility to Protect" advocates, that he could trump congressional approval for his attack by claiming that humanitarian operations do not require approval under the War Powers Resolution or Article I, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution.

Many of Washington's insiders went to bed Friday night firmly convinced that Obama would give the final order to attack Syria sometime during the early Saturday morning hours of August 30. However, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Martin Dempsey, made a hurried trip to the White House during the early morning hours of Saturday to make one last final plea to hold off on any attack.

WMR has learned from White House sources that Dempsey told Obama that the president's plan would not work. "If you do this, the plan will fail and you'll get in deeper. And without congressional approval, you'll be screwed," Dempsey told Obama.

Dempsey's warning about Congress had merit. Already, 210 House members signed a letter to Obama warning him not to attack Syria without congressional authorization. In addition, a head count showed that some Democrats would join Republicans in voting for impeachment if a bill were introduced.

Dempsey's argument prevailed and Obama decided to hold off on any attack until Congress reconvenes after Labor Day. Obama decided he would seek a congressional vote to authorize a military strike on Syria. However, in overriding Rice, Power, Rhodes, and Secretary of State John Kerry, who all favored a military strike, Dempsey incurred the wrath of the R2P faction that dominates the National Security Council. State Department sources began spreading the word that Obama would still attack Syria without congressional approval. The Pentagon, on the other hand, pointed out that none of the National Security Council "heavies," Rice, Power, or Rhodes had any military experience and that Kerry was channeling the wishes of his good friend Senator John McCain, who has consistently supported Al Qaeda-led rebels in Syria and Libya.

Obama is faced with another grim reality. Some within the Pentagon ranks are so displeased with Obama's policies on Syria, they have let certain members of Congress of both parties know that "smoking gun" proof exists that Obama and CIA director John O. Brennan personally authorized the transfer of arms and personnel from Al-Qaeda-linked Ansar al Sharia Islamist rebels in Libya to Syria's Jabhat al Nusra rebels, who are also linked to Al Qaeda, in what amounts to an illegal "Iran-contra"-like scandal. The proof is said to be highly "impeachable."

The developing scandal involves Turkish, Qatari, Lebanese, and Croatian firms and front operations; Qatar Airways Cargo; ousted officials of the Mohamed Morsi government of Egypt; small Turkish and Jordanian air service companies contracted by the CIA; Saudi intelligence chief Prince Bandar bin Sultan Al Saud; the September 11, 2012 attack on the CIA annex in Benghazi; and "black" carve-out contracts with the U.S. Air Force.

Obama's, Brennan's, and then-CIA director David Petraeus's knowledge of the operation was so intimate, Petraeus visited GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney in October of last year to plead with him not to bring up the covert operation in the third presidential debate. Romney acceded to Petraeus's request.

I am borrowing another excerpt from Madsen which includes a possible connection between major CIA pointman on the Caucasus and indeed Islamic fundamentalist network logistical support over the years (interesting in the pre-2001 interval eh) . Graham Fuller keeps popping up as a major figure in all of this, perhaps he will turn out to be something like the Oliver North of 9-11 itself - not to mention the sponsor of the Boston bombers' uncle Ruslan. Once the angles with Fuller surfaced, did anyone notice how fast mainstream press attention drained away from their backgrounds??!!!

SOURCE: http://waynemadsenreport.com/articles/20130830 - August 30-September 1, 2013 -- Partner of Boston bombers' "Uncle Ruslan" right hand man to 3 CIA directors

The murky world of the CIA's past and current support for radical Islamist groups on three continents has emerged in newly-released documents from the CIA that show that Graham Fuller, the agency's one-time top interlocutor with the Saudis, Afghan mujaheddin, and Muslim Brotherhood, was a right-hand man to three CIA directors.

Fuller, a business partner of Ruslan Tsarni (Tsarnaev), the uncle of the accused Boston Marathon bombers, served as a close adviser to CIA directors William Casey, William Webster, and Robert Gates, according to recently declassified internal CIA memoranda. Since retiring from the CIA, Fuller has been engaged in supporting the Chechen Islamist guerrilla groups fighting Russia as well as the Republic of Georgia, which has become a base for anti-Russian and anti-Syrian military activities, which includes, the transport of chemical weapons to Syrian rebels from the Pentagon-operated Richard G. Lugar Center for Public Health Research in Tbilisi, which, although a biological weapons research laboratory, also warehouses chemical agents, according to U.S. intelligence sources familiar with the facility. The Tbilisi facility was the major source of chemical agents used by Syrian rebels to attack civilians outside of Damascus in a "false flag" terrorist operation coordinated by the CIA and Mossad.

Throughout the 1980s, Fuller was front and center at many of the acts of violence in the Middle East and South Asia, from Lebanon and Syria to Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, and South Yemen. One CIA memo describes how Fuller was also heavily involved in the early part of the CIA's stirring political activities in the Balkans during the collapse of Communism in eastern Europe. A May 22, 1985, memo from George Kolt, the CIA's National Intelligence Officer for Europe, invited Fuller to a June 11, 1985, dinner at CIA Headquarters at which the former U.S. ambassador to Bulgaria, Robert Barry, discussed at the Confidential level "The Strategic Importance of the Balkans for the United States." [......]

I'm leaving the rest of the story off for now out of respect for an indie journo making a run at this ... and moments after plugging this in, Wayne's site is having Varnish caching issues. It's all got to be cross checked - someone could be feeding him knowingly bad info for their own purposes certainly - I think we have a substantial amount of paydirt on our hands here.

I've been wondering when the Iraqi era chemical weapons angle will pop up. This whole damn thing is such a bad trip and I think most of America pretty much realizes that. See the other category tags on this post archives circa 2002-2010 eh? .... firing off quick posts here on the big impending quagmire.

YELLOWCAKE WAS A RED HERRING. The real deal was the Carlyle type US-made stuff distributed by American companies - and some stocks that were almost certainly transferred to Syria. Speculating but: Any airstrike on the caches would of course pollute the area and also obliterate the chain of custody evidence that indeed this was yet another Bush-originated obscenity...

Evidence of American War Crimes Likely Target in Syria

By Frank Gregory Ford, former U.S. Military Intelligence Agent

While Obama's Department of Justice seeks to shield the Bush Administration by declaring their war crimes “business as usual,” his Department of Defense prepares to eliminate hard evidence of those crimes by destroying Syria's stockpile of weapons of mass destruction. Those WMDs came from us.

I saw canisters, “bombs,” of VX/GF in storage in Iraq. They were tagged showing they were shipped there from Ft. Rucker, Alabama by the Carlyle Group, the giant blue-ribbon finance-and-weapons conglomerate, home to former-President George H.W. Bush and other prominent war profiteers.

The nerve agent VX is the deadliest chemical weapon ever made. It is useful only for the indiscriminate destruction of human and animal life. It has been outlawed internationally, most recently by the Chemical Weapons Convention of 1993, by the Biological and Toxic Weapons Convention of 1972 and the Geneva Protocol of 1925.

We supplied VX to Iraq's leader, Saddam Hussein, before we named him an enemy. He used it in his war against Iran and against civilian Iraqi Kurds. I learned from an Iraqi official that just before our 2003 invasion Saddam shipped great quantities of gold and nerve gas to Syria. I reported this “actionable intelligence” to my superiors, but no action followed.

The stockpile I saw was never shipped out of Iraq. It was hidden from weapons inspectors until I and others saw it in 2003, just days after we invaded. It was soon removed from its concealment by British specialists and destroyed.

It is virtually certain that this weapons cache is targeted in our run-up to an attack on Syria—as before, with Iraq—for using U.S.-made weapons. The attack is also virtually certain to eliminate evidence of complicity by the Bush presidents, father and son, who, through their positions as American presidents and as associates of the Carlyle Group and myriad other military contractors, provided them to the warring nations of the Middle East.

As with Iraq, Afghanistan and so many of America's recent military engagements, this looming rebuke to Bashar al-Assad for allegedly using internationally outlawed American-made weapons, will fall on a vastly smaller opponent. Syria has a population of fewer than 23 million highly vulnerable men, women and children in a country that would fit in Texas almost four times. The capital, Damascus, the home of the government and location of the WMD stockpile, is the oldest continuously occupied city in the world.

Sprawling interview w wtfrly.com on activist news, next week on The Rundown Live

Alright here's a link if you want to check out. Super long like 2.3hr interview with WTFRLY.com editor Baran Hines covering lots of stuff on police state materials, local goings on including DRE.

Had a mention of the shady MnSCU shutdown of organic agriculture training, Turkey, Brazil, activist media organizing you name it. I have been trying to help out WTFRLY now and then, there is no shortage of stuff getting put through there including some fun deep research items.

Also talked about Syria, middle eastern scenario, name dropped Graham Fuller, a key CIA figure apparently involved in 9-11 and close to the Chechen family accused of running the recent attacks in Boston. [Sibel Edmonds named Fuller in her rogue's gallery of 9-11 people as well]

Includes also a little bit at the end about the Integral Community Exchange System for alternative time banking and barter that I have been working on cleanup / Drupal basics this summer in my spare time.

On Monday I am scheduled to do an interview with The RunDownLive with Mike P - sort of We Are Change Milwaukee, therundownlive.com , bigpzone.com, twitter.com/bigpzone. There was funny stuff with Stew Webb on here earlier.

Also the Drug Recognition Evaluator program lawsuit is going to federal court in July. Get info on it at http://nathanmhansen.blogspot.com from my friend Nathan Hansen who is pursuing the case. [disclosure: I did a bit of design work for Hansen in years past. Not very much but worth noting.]

Anyway nothing too grand but I figure it's good to do some casual long form interviews about some deep subjects for a change.

Behind the veil in Syria & the abuse of secrecy

Alrighty... so there's a lot of stuff going on, but I found a couple pieces of writing today that ought to be shared. One is a writeup on what it's really like to live in Syria, and reading this really woke me up and conveyed life beyond stereotypes and generic messages of fear. It's Sondja's first writeup for one of my favorite sites, Agonist.org, where international affairs are discussed in a thoughtful way.
What is Behind the Veil - A Deeper Look into Syria

So maybe they don’t look like us, but sometimes I think it is just a mask. Maybe underneath their out-of-date fashion and gelled-back hair, there’s something similar. After all, the Arabs are a people who love having barbeques and watching soap-operas, they all have i-pods and enjoy going out for coffee with friends. They know everything about what happened on the last episode of Friends, say “Bless you,” when someone sneezes, and dare I say, like most Americans, they have little sense of the outside world and geography. But it goes much deeper than that.

This “Muslim State” also happens to be the rightful home to many followers of other faiths. Just like in America, we officially say, “In God we Trust,” but if there are Americans who call God Buddha, that’s okay too. For instance, Syria’s main mosque, the Umayyad Mosque, is part Sunni, part Shi’ite, was once a Christian church, and before that a Jewish synagogue, and even before that a Roman temple. And all who wish to worship there still can.

Over the millennia Syria has been a melting pot of many cultures and religions, like America but on a more ancient and less obvious scale. From our perspective, just by looking at the people there seems to be little variation. It’s like I once thought Arabic was one language, or that the Phoenician people of Beirut looked the same as those with Bedouin roots, and for all I knew the Algerian immigrant selling toe-nail clippers on the street could have been born in Turkey. But the Arab people know their diversities. For them, different languages and dialects are part of everyday life, and toleration has been what has kept Damascus the oldest continuously-lived-in capital in the world.

Many Armenians fled persecution in Turkey by coming to Syria and have now melted into the Arabic culture so well that sometimes all that is left are sparse Armenian words, different ways of cooking eggplant, and their blue eyes. When the Palestinians were escaping wars in Israel, Syria accepted them, and now with a surplus of Iraqi refugees, the ancient borders of the city of Damascus have extended ten-fold. The forests and orchards surrounding the same walls that St. Paul escaped from have been cut to build more housing, and the river that nourished these people for thousands of years is now a sewage trickle. And still people immigrate across those desert borders, some dying along the way, but for the sake of being humane, Syrian must let them come. As an American, I understand this situation.

So this is the enemy, I have to remind myself. Complete with Santa Claus parades and snow-ball fights. Who would have thought? Young boys playing soccer in the streets, and ice cream cones covered in pistachios; I don’t know, but maybe it’s just not interesting enough to show these things on the news. Or maybe it’s not broadcast because the real Syria is something we are already familiar with.

Americans tend to think we have all the choices in the world, all the news, the whole spectrum. Sometimes I stand baffled at the grocery store not knowing which apple to buy: red, or yellow, or green, until I realize they are all owned by the same company. We have over three hundred channels on the television, with all the same commercials. In America we come from completely separate places and backgrounds, but if we were given the choice to exchange all these unique lives that we are living for a wealthy lifestyle and the looks of that one girl on the cover of the magazine, most of us would. We claim to be free, just as long as we ignore the encroaching government surveillance, and we claim to be rich, but it is wealth purchased with debt. So before we go blaming another country for what we have and what they lack, we should stop to think. What if we showed the truth about ourselves? This is what happened to me while in I was in Syria, for I was constantly learning truths about my own American-ness that I never even realized.

And it goes on...

Meanwhile at the always mysterious Cryptome.org we have the latest angle on what all this spooky New World Order secrecy business is all about: The abuse of secrecy:

A writes:

In all the research you've accumulated, have you been able to piece it all together, like the pieces of a puzzle, so as to form a working/coherent worldview, which makes sense of all that is going on in the world, that on the surface, seems unrelated? Is there a push for a "New World Order /ONE WORLD GOVERNMENT, among the wealthiest top 2% of the world's total population? Also, what can we/should we, as individuals, do, in order to take back our country, and preserve our liberty, as Americans?

Cryptome:

Certainly there is highly organized cooperation among the world's wealthy, individuals, institutions and corporations. To the extent this group is able to influence governments, it does aim to influence political, economic and social policy to serve its interests.

There continues to be competition among governments as well as among the members of this wealthy group and that leads to disagreement and dispute about who is supreme -- the group does not like equality and therefore continually struggles to gain control of its members openly and covertly.

Covert manipulation of the group and the populace of nations is carried out by the world's vast intelligence operations, private and governmental, which is itself a global force which may be more powerful than that based on wealth or national identity.

The principal tool for covert manipulation is secrecy, again private and governmental. Secrecy fosters deception and cloaks criminal activity, and most importantly, it is opposed to democratic openness and prevents full governmental transparency and accountability.

Secrecy is increasing, and to the exact extent it increases it favors those who keep secrets and enforce laws that protect secrecy, most often invoked on the basis of "national security" but also heavily used to hide commercial malfeasance.

My view is that secrecy is the greatest threat to freedom throughout the world, by far the greatest threat to democracy and freedom, and has been in history and will continue to be. Without secrecy none of the private and governmental means to control and exploit the uninformed populace would work.

Abuse of secrecy underlies all efforts to frighten the populace into submission and obedience. The current financial crisis an example, not different from that used to go to war in Iraq and wars galore in the past and yet to come unless people rise up to abolish secrecy -- which they do from time to time, thank goodness, but the vile addictive practice requires constant medication, or best, surgical removal.

Jordanian prince discerns suppressed American/Israeli extremist plan to shatter Arab nationalism into statelets: Re-Ottomanization & Oded Yinon revisited

 Images Hassan

"Hey now... I mean seriously WTF?" this photo seems to say...

A suppressed slice of news from the Mideast: a top member of Jordanian royalty discerns a plan to break up the Middle East into an array of new states with Israel up top. Here's a slice from Kurt Nimmo's Another Day in the Empire blog: Prince Hassan: Neocons and Israel Plan “New 100 Years of War” in the Middle East:

[Despite American media suppression] what does Bin Talal and millions of Arabs know?

“After a keynote speech at the European Policy Centre in Brussels on the ‘coexistence of civilizations’ Prince Hassan Bin Tallal, crown prince of Jordan in the final days of the late King Hussein, spoke to Today’s Zaman…. Prince Hassan made it clear that the idea of breaking Iraq into pieces, as is circulating in some US and Israeli circles, would be a fatal mistake. The Jordanian prince warned that a possible break-up would play into the hands of Israeli ‘extremists,’ making Israel the dominant minority in a region of minorities.”

Prince Hassan “is now one of the leading intellectuals and activists of the Islamic world,” and yet his comments go unreported in this country. “I want to cite the Clean Break paper of 1996 attributed to the conservatives in the US. It seems to me that the concept of pan-Arabism, pan-Islamism, supra-national identity was actually taken to pieces by this paper, arguing somehow that fragmentation was taking place in that part of the world, so let us take full advantage of this. Muslims and Arabs do not need enemies as they are doing an excellent job of destroying each other. Of course this plays into the hands of Israeli extremists that believe Israel should emerge as the dominating minority in a region of minorities or a mosaic of minorities.

The idea of taking “to pieces” Arab nationalism is hardly revelatory. “This is not a new idea, nor does it surface for the first time in Zionist strategic thinking,” writes Khalil Nakhleh in the publisher’s note to Israel Shahak’s transation of Oded Yinon’s A Strategy for Israel in the Nineteen Eighties. “Indeed, fragmenting all Arab states into smaller units has been a recurrent theme,” going back at least to the memoirs of Moshe Sharett, former prime minister of Israel, as documented by Livia Rokach (Israel’s Sacred Terrorism: A study based on Moshe Sharett’s Personal Diary). Of course, until the Israelis hit the jackpot with the neocons, who were able to infiltrate the Bush administration and drive U.S. foreign policy, they were unable to carry out their master plan on the scale envisioned.

End of the Westphalian system, the end of the Middle Eastern community of states, the beginning of a Balkanization that could lead, in the words of the former Iraqi Defense Minister Ali Allawi, to a new 100 years of war,” Hassan continues.

In short, a plan perfect for the Israelis and their neocon helpers.

Of course, none of this matters—as we are essentially deaf, dumb, and blind here in America, a condition facilitated by the corporate media—and it appears quite plain we are headed for what Hassan characterizes as a “new 100 years of war,” not simply in the Middle East but across the board.

Who is Oded Yinon? One of those hardcore rightwing Zionists who wanted to see the chips fall where they may in the midst of chaos, leaving Israel as the ascendant regional hegemon. I'm not claiming this is the dominant strategic view in Israel, but it's still tempting as a perceived way for Israel to escape the grim wheels of fate. More sane Israeli analysts and strategists don't favor such madcap schemes, since the ensuing chaos would leave Israel far more vulnerable to nuclear attack, as nuclear proliferation would surely accelerate, probably leaving nukes in the hands of irrational actors.

So it's a chancy scheme. What kind of map are these guys after? Something kinda retrograde, like this:

 Gen Maps 1700S 1721Ottoman3200

More sweet maps here.

Check out The Zionist Plan for the Middle East by Oded Yinon, translated and edited by Israel Shahak, one of those old school kinds of theoretical schemes. Here is Shahak's introduction. Shahak is a leftist dissident Zionist and Israeli professor:

The Association of Arab-American University Graduates finds it compelling to inaugurate its new publication series, Special Documents, with Oded Yinon's article which appeared in Kivunim (Directions), the journal of the Department of Information of the World Zionist Organization. Oded Yinon is an Israeli journalist and was formerly attached to the Foreign Ministry of Israel. To our knowledge, this document is the most explicit, detailed and unambiguous statement to date of the Zionist strategy in the Middle East. Furthermore, it stands as an accurate representation of the "vision" for the entire Middle East of the presently ruling Zionist regime of Begin, Sharon and Eitan. Its importance, hence, lies not in its historical value but in the nightmare which it presents.

The plan operates on two essential premises. To survive, Israel must 1) become an imperial regional power, and 2) must effect the division of the whole area into small states by the dissolution of all existing Arab states. Small here will depend on the ethnic or sectarian composition of each state. Consequently, the Zionist hope is that sectarian-based states become Israel's satellites and, ironically, its source of moral legitimation.

This is not a new idea, nor does it surface for the first time in Zionist strategic thinking. Indeed, fragmenting all Arab states into smaller units has been a recurrent theme. This theme has been documented on a very modest scale in the AAUG publication, Israel's Sacred Terrorism (1980), by Livia Rokach. Based on the memoirs of Moshe Sharett, former Prime Minister of Israel, Rokach's study documents, in convincing detail, the Zionist plan as it applies to Lebanon and as it was prepared in the mid-fifties.

The first massive Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1978 bore this plan out to the minutest detail. The second and more barbaric and encompassing Israeli invasion of Lebanon on June 6, 1982, aims to effect certain parts of this plan which hopes to see not only Lebanon, but Syria and Jordan as well, in fragments. This ought to make mockery of Israeli public claims regarding their desire for a strong and independent Lebanese central government. More accurately, they want a Lebanese central government that sanctions their regional imperialist designs by signing a peace treaty with them. They also seek acquiescence in their designs by the Syrian, Iraqi, Jordanian and other Arab governments as well as by the Palestinian people. What they want and what they are planning for is not an Arab world, but a world of Arab fragments that is ready to succumb to Israeli hegemony. Hence, Oded Yinon in his essay, "A Strategy for Israel in the 1980's," talks about "far-reaching opportunities for the first time since 1967" that are created by the "very stormy situation [that] surrounds Israel."

Haaretz: Mossad & Israeli military intelligence disagree over Syrian intentions

"There is no intelligence that a war is going to break out with Syria this summer," [Israeli Defense Minister] Peretz said.

Well here you go. This indicates a few things. First of all it shows that Israeli military intelligence fully realizes that a war with Israel is not in Bashar Assad's interests. It also shows the Mossad is pissed.

Most importantly, there is pretty much no justification for what American hawks say about how fuckin evil Bashar Assad is, if Israel's top military analysts admit he isn't wanting to stir up a ton of trouble. Basically I don't understand how American war nuts can go so far when the Israelis won't, even though Assad is their fracking 'adversary' of renown.

Haaretz: MI and Mossad disagree over Assad's intentions

Military Intelligence believes that Syrian President Bashar Assad is serious about wanting to make peace with Israel, but the Mossad disagrees.

Brigadier General Yossi Baiditz, the head of MI's research division, told the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee yesterday, "Syria's signals about peace are genuine, and are intended to send Israel the message that they [the Syrians] are interested in peace in order to improve their regional situation."

But last week, Mossad chief Meir Dagan told the committee that he does not take Syria's peace overtures seriously. Every time Assad comes under international pressure, Dagan said, he pulls a "rabbit" out of his hat regarding his readiness to begin peace talks. "But I don't see Syria offering to resume negotiations with Israel," he said. "They have made public statements, but they have not made any attempt to turn to the U.S. and Europe to try to advance the diplomatic proces."

And Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, speaking at a meeting of his Kadima faction yesterday, said he "has no doubt that it is possible to begin speaking with Syria if it commits itself to ending violence and its support for terror, for Hamas and Hezbollah, and severs its connection with Iran." However, he said, he expects Assad to stop making "bombastic declarations" with nothing behind them and to take concrete action that would lead to a diplomatic process.

But Baiditz told the Foreign Affairs Committee that Syria is reluctant to make any gestures because it identifies no willingness on the part of the United States and Israel to meet it halfway.

Baiditz acknowledged that Syria is also building up its forces in preparation for a possible conflict with Israel, in part by acquiring weapons that could hit Israel's home front. However, he said, Damascus is not interested in such a conflict, and negotiations with Israel are in Syria's interests.

Committee members sounded rather confused by the Dagan-Baiditz disagreement. MK Danny Yatom (Labor), himself a former Mossad chief, said that Olmert should sit the two men down in one room and demand that each explain "how he interprets the exact same intelligence material in the opposite fashion - and then make a decision." In Olmert's place, he added, he would accept MI's interpretation.

In response to a query from MK Ran Cohen (Meretz), Baiditz confirmed that MI's view has been presented to Olmert.

A source in the Prime Minister's Office responded: "We believe the Syrians want to obtain the Golan Heights. The question - which MI doesn't answer - is whether negotiations with Syria would lead to the achievement of our goals, such as expulsion of the terrorist headquarters from Damascus and a severing of Syria's ties with Iran."

Baiditz, added the source, also failed to address Dagan's claim that talks with Syria would damage Israel's relations with Egypt, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

Meanwhile, Defense Minister Amir Peretz commented yesterday on a statement by army intelligence, reported in the media a few weeks ago, that war could erupt with Syria this summer. "There is no intelligence that a war is going to break out with Syria this summer," Peretz said.

Iraq Study Group: Nice work, guys! Even give back Golan Heights to Syria??!

News today has been dominated by the release of the Iraq Study Group report, a 100+ page compendium with more than 70 specific recommendations. I have to say that I am very impressed.

The report is notable for its direct advocacy of negotiations with Iran and Syria, the importance of building a broader Middle East peace effort. I was pretty much shocked to see it included advocating a Israeli-Syrian peace deal entailing returning the whole Golan Heights to Syria! WTF?!

Given that such awful neocons as Reuel Marc Gerecht and Clifford May were in the ISG, it is an extremely conciliatory document that achieves a certain level of understanding of how Sunni, Shiite and Kurdish militias will all have to be diplomatically engaged in order to preserve American interests. Even negotiating with Sadr! Promising no permanent bases, no permanent American oil domination? Hot damn!

No group in Iraq is placed on a pedestal here. Sadr's militia is fragmenting, Shiite death squads are all over the bureaucracies, all of this is placed in realistic, stark terms. That alone seems like a giant accomplishment.

The doses of reality about how various Iraqi militant and paramilitary groups have run amok is an important step towards the Beltway finally getting a grip on reality. I was also impressed by the list of people the ISG consulted, including important Syrian and Iranian diplomats, as well as important Sunni Iraqi tribal leaders like the Dulaimis.

Also I listened to much of the hearings on Gates coming into Defense yesterday, and Gates sounded pretty good. He admitted we are not winning in Iraq, and that diplomacy is important all around. As NPR put it, he sounded more like someone for Secretary of State, not Defense. When Gates was questioned by Robert Byrd, he admitted that the scenarios of Iranian retaliation after American attacks would be disastrous.

Honestly, today marks a huge setback for the general neoconservative perspective – there are barely any shadings of neocon eschatological/threatening type bullshit in the ISG, and Gates is obviously not from that school at all. 'Hawkery' itself finds little comfort in the ISG or with Gates.

And seriously (Syriously?), giving the Golan back to Syria? AIPAC's going to shit a brick. Too damn good. A huge step forward for the Antiwar movement.

Everything is still fucked up. But at least it seems like the adults are in charge now. Throughout Mr. Gates' testimony and the ISG report, you can tell the old Project for a New American Century is just fuckin' done.

The curtain is down on the old days. The prospects aren't good right now, but they don't want to double down by bombing Damascus anymore. Good days.
